Hi,

I know very little about networks, so please dumb down your help!

I have been using VPN on Windows XP for a couple of years. I log into VPN, then open the Remote Desktop and log on to my work computer. Just a few days ago, something very bad happened! I can still log into the VPN, but I lose all connectivity. For example, I cannot use the Remote Desktop, and I lose all Internet access. My gut instinct was that this was a firewall issue at my work, but they say no. Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Check for any recent updates that Windows may have received. I ti very possible an update changed something and if so uninstalling it should fix the issue. Same should also apply to any other software like virus software.

Would this be updates on my local computer, or on the server at work?

Either. Go back to the date all worked then stopped, did your pc update, server or maybe the network firewall. An example for you...I have employees that remote in from time to time and one day the server recived an update and knocked out the static IP.

So now I can connect to VPN and then remote desktop from other wireless connections except for my wireless at home, which is Comcast. They are coming out tomorrow. Anyone else have sudden problems with Comcast and VPN? I have a Netgear wireless router and use Cisco VPN. Worked for 2 years and suddenly stopped.

I have the exact same issue. I used Cisco VPN w/ Comcast to telecommute for 1 1/2 years. Suddenly, it stopped working. I can connect to the VPN but cannot access the internet OR intranet after authenticating. I have reinstalled my VPN software, replaced my router and replaced my cable modem. Nothing works. And I can connect just fine from the local coffee shop which also uses Comcast. I am beginning to think Comcast is blocking VPN w/ residential and allowing it only for business accounts.

Hi southernsheri,

In my case, it did turn out to be the equipment. Comcast replaced the router with a new router and a modem, and now it works. I hope you find a solution. I know how frustrating this is.

From where to where? Home to work? What is on the remote site in terms of a router? For a remote access VPN, your router has nothing to do with it. Can you ping the remote site IP address? Can you use a free port scanner to see if UDP/TCP port 10000 is open on the remote router?
