I installed rehat 6.1 with all options
I was able to telnet / FTP it for a few days
The only thing I installed was StarOffice

Now I can't Telnet / FTP from my other PC to the linux.
It says connecting... and I get a timeout.
I don't even get the chance to enter a username or password.

I can still ping the server, there is no router or firewall between them. If I do a telnet/FTP on the server to it's own IP address everything works fine!

Can somebody help me with this problem please, It can be something stupid as I'm new to Linux

Thank you!!!

My apologies for being as vague as I am but this sounds to me like a resolution problem. Has any DNS information changed?

Can you ftp from the RH box out to another host. Does that work ?

Is the problem connecting to the RH box from an external host ?

have you looked in your /etc/hosts.allow & /etc/hosts.deny files.

I dont know if you know that these files control by IP address, who is permitted to use each service on your machine.

I can help you further with this if need be...

good luck
Darren

Hi,

Has some one changed the /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/hosts.allow or /etc/hosts.deny files? Please check it.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem with RH 7.1. I can ping in/out of my linux box; can even ftp/telnet from linux to other boxes. But, I can't ftp/telnet into the linux box. All the correct daemons are running and I can ftp/telnet locally. I'm not using DNS since I enter IP addresses.

Help!
