System, Samsung RC-512L laptop, Microsoft windows 7 home premium 64-bit.
Problem: can't find any referance to Comm ports anywhere.

What I have looked at: Device manager, with hidden devices diplayed,BIOS setup screens. There is no referance to any options for enable of ports in the BIOS. There are no entrys in the device manager for ports of any type. This is a new laptop by the way. I havent been hacking around in it. Microsoft says go see the manufacturer of the hardware. I havent attempted to add ay USB hardware yet. This is all in preperation for a new USB-Serial solution. Is it possable that the motherboard and it's BIOS just don't support Comm ports? No, I havn't gone for a BIOS update. The box isn't even a year old yet. Any Ideas out there?

If there are serial ports available (D connector(s)) then it would appear that you have an issue with the BIOS and it may be time to flash an upgrade.

If the laptop doesn't have any DB-9 connectors, then it doesn't have serial ports. You'll probably see several USB ports, and possibly even and HDMI port. Welcome to the new world of PC's!
If you have external gear you need to connect with serially, you need to look into USB-to-Serial adapters. You'll likely also note that there is no onboard modem (RJ-11 connector) - you're expected to connect to the outside world by WiFi (no connector at all) or an RJ-45 for Ethernet - and if you check the specs, you may find that it's good for 10/100/1000BaseT

There won't be any displayed, because there are no resources set aside for their use until you plug the usb to serial adapter in, then after it recognizes the device and loads a driver, it will show a com port associated in device manager with the adapter, and you can change the serial port at that time. At least that's how mine works, when I use it for console work.
