Before I tell any of the problems, my computer is not infected lol. I run antivir, malware bytes, super anti spyware, and others regularly. Anyway, the problem I am having is all of a sudden now, I can not get any dvd/cdrom drive, burner or not, to work in my computer. Everytime I try one, it shows up in device manager as this

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Now let me explain what happened before all of this took place. I did have an infection that happened before this, the lovely antivirus 2010 bug. Slipped in my machine through a java file. Anyway, I took a couple of hours, removed the infection, changed all my passwords, cleaned the registry using eusing free registry cleaner. Then when I restarted, I remember windows all of a sudden "detecting" my lite on dvd burner drive that has been in my machine for 3 years.

Threw me off, but I did not pay much attention at first. Figured maybe the cable had come loose. Then later on when I went to use it, I noticed it was not working. Checked device manager, it said the error listed above, which I will post again.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Anyway, at that point I figured the drive had just went out, as I have used it many of times over the years. So I switched it out with a spare I had laying around, that was working on another machine. Well its saying the same thing, so at this point, I am thinking part of the registry which deals with that has become corrupted. I am not sure though.

Any ideas/thoughts? The drive is IDE. Thanks

Try a google search for "dvd disappeared filter". Suspect that it is not your problem but you need to be aware of it.

Little more from a test I just performed. Not sure why I didn't think of it earlier. Anyway, I tried booting in does from the drive to see if it would load. Loaded windows install cd just fine. So I am pretty sure the drive is working, just if I could figure out what is messing up in windows.

eFreak, try this first:

faq602-5328

if that does not work, it may be time to do a REPAIR or InPlace Ugrade Install...

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

either the Virus corrupted the Registry or the succinct repair of it...

Ok, drive is working perfectly now. Reads and burns. Just one minor issue now. It shows under an unknown tab. How do I get it back to showing cd/dvdrw tab? Thanks

I will keep looking to see if I can figure it out, as I like knowing. One of the reasons I do long way things lol. I learn more, so I know more. Anyway stars to both of you for helping me fix this. Appreciate it!

Check and see if secondary IDE is being seen. You could also shut down the pc remove the ide cable from the mainboard feeding the cd drives restart the computer and let it go to windows then shut down and reconnect the ide cable and restart the computer and see if it picks up the new IDE interface.
