I had to format one of my pc's, an e-machine 466i. After formating I ran the start up floppy and then the win 98 cd.It loaded almost all the way then said it couldn't find "r" drive. (should be "d").abort,retry,fail. I've done everything I can think of to fix this problem. Does any one have any suggestions for this problem?? Thank you

Have a look in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and see if there is a line that looks like:

MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /L:R

The important bit is the emboldened section: the R means "Assign the CD-ROM drive the letter R under DOS" and this will be carried through to Windows if it is executed from the prompt.
Simply remove this section and resave Autoexec.bat.

So you booted from 98 boot floppy with CD support?
Could you access the CD from dos prompt (eg, normally E: - if one hard drive/one fat partition on it) by typing e:?

Or is there something different going on here?

Thanks guys, I think it was the boot disk, I downloaded one with dos and no ram drive and that did the trick. After I powered down the pc, that is.I now have a os that is ok except for one thing...When I try to access the dvd rom drive, it says "d:/ is not accessable...the device is not ready." Any ideas on the solution for this one?? It looks ok in device manager.

Have you just installed windows from a cd in this drive (ie, it is working?). Have you tried various CD/DVDs in the drive?

I did install 98 with the cd, but it was in the boot mode. I have tried a number of cd's since and get that msg. It does recognize the floppy tho.The device manager says that the device is working properly and I've put drivers from the mfg. web site. I have it in the bios as the third device in line. Don't know where to go from here, Over my head. Thank you
