After an electrical storm, computer showed no signs power when turned on. Tested power supply, no power, replaced it with a new one of higher wattage. When powered up, computer ran for about 30 sec. and then shut down. Now no sign of power. Tested power supply and am getting some 5 volt readings but no 12 volts. Could this be mother board or hard drive issue? Can on of these kill a power supply? Thanks in advance.

is the second power supply you tried new, if so then my first guess would be your motherboard, it probably got shorted somehow, to test that i would take everything out and unplug all drives except for your proc and ram, then try to boot and see how long it lasts, if it doesnt work then its most likely your mobo, if it boots, start adding cards and drives and do a process of elimination.

I've seen electrical storms fry m/bs and hard drives.
Pull the power to the hard drives to narrow it to the m/b.
12 volt problems are generally the line drivers that ground out the 12 v lines. And usually when they fail like this there is either the top blown off or a serious miscoloration on the top of the chip. Ed Fair
