i can not for the life of me figure out why my computer is not even POSTing. It doesnt beep or even stir. It just sits there.

any help or insight would be greatly appreciated

Usual problem is the power supply. It dies, the computer dies.

Well, your power supply could have failed for starters.
Does anything happen at all? Does the fan on the back of the power supply come on? If not try a new power cord and if that dosn't work looks like a bad PSU...

Absolutely nothing happens when i hit the power switch. I dont think that it is the connection from the power switch to the mobo. I really wouldnt expect the PS i chose (enermax 460w) to just give up like that but i might try what you said

I would, no brand or model is immune from breaking down. Have you switched the PSU with another to test?

Is this a new or old sysetm?

It is a brand new system i built and the PS is a retail enermax PS. I unfortunately do not have a spare power supply to test but i will tell you if fiddling with it fixes the problem.

You built this system - has it every booted? If not, did you put whole machine together before trying it at all? (might be worth removing all peripherals except keyboard & graphics card - though you would expect at least some lights on the mobo to come on when you power on).

I would expect that one of the fans somewhere would at least start to rotate for some portion of a turn as power comes up. If none move I would suspect PS as initially dead. If one moves at all I would suspect a short somewhere or the PS crwobarring for some reason, but possibly dying under power.
And then you might try moving the power select switch. If you had an intermittent switch there you would never power on, even with the 5 volt keepalive circuits.

Would be a nice time for an ammeter to see if there is an initial inrush.

Well from personal experience of FRYING my first pc I built. I am thinking you may have done the same. It's a learning experience but worth it because it gets expensive after a few boards and cpus. From the system's that I have built, their is one additional power plug for Intel boards that you plug into the mobo but for AMD mobos you only need the one (the biggest power plug from the PSU). Another reason it might not be booting up is you mounted your CPU the wrong way (which I've done myself). So if you are 100% sure you have pieced it together correctly the last thing to try is using a trusty ole PCI video card rather than a monster AGP card to boot it up. It's just a few things I've learned from my own mistakes as I was building my over the past 2 years. Hope those things helped you out. Good luck. [thumbsup2]

thanks everyone for your help. After fiddling with the power supply for a while i finally was able to get it working. thanks for all your advice and support.

Would you care to elaborate as to what exactly the problem was for our benefit?
Thanks.

Yes, we really would appreciate it if you'd let us know what you did to get it working!
Cheers!
