No Backup

We have a client on a windows network, Win XP, every night they have a backup job running(using MS backup).This backup sends the data to an external hard drive. For some reason The backup breaks every night. When looking at the logs it seems that something within the program isn't right. We then ran a manual backup which went without a hitch. all of the tests we've done so far point to something in the sceduele utility. Has anyone see this before or have any ideas?

Users in the Run As box in Scheduled tasks need to have read access to the scheduled executable and any associated companion files required to complete the task.
