We have a Cisco 1600 router in our network. I was trying to change the Telnet password and somehow made a mistake. (I'm not sure what I did) Anyway, now when I try and enter the enable mode, I get the following prompt:

>enable
% No authentication server running

Does anyone have a clue what I might have done and how to fix it?

Please post your config so we can see what where dealing with. My first thought was it appears that you were trying to setup AAA authentification username and passwords. You
know that the telnet password comes from

line vty 0 4
login
password ( Password ) Jeter@LasVegas.com Remember to pass Cisco's CCNA you need at least an 849 to pass!!!

As I can't login, I can't get to the config.

So you can not log in through the console nor the aux port ?
Another attempt would be through SNMP, other than that a password recovery may be needed !!! Jeter@LasVegas.com Remember to pass Cisco's CCNA you need at least an 849 to pass!!!

If you don't know what a password recovery is, you gotta use the Hyperterminal to access via console port.
Push CRT+BREAK (you have 60 seconds)
then type en
type conf-reg 0x2142
type i
type n
type copy startup-config running-config
tye configure terminal
type line vty 0 4
type login
type passwd your_new_password
type exit
type config-register 0x2102
type CRT+Z
type copy running-config startup-config
type reload

and you have it!!. But first, read the manual ('cause I ain't sure if those are the steps you gotta take)

GOOD LUCK

Carmelo

Will doing the password recovery erase all other configuration settings?
Dan

Thanks to all of your for your help.
Dan

NO..no..no.. done properly, the password hack into the router does NOT erase the present config.. all it does is give you access to the router to reset the passwords and then save them.. you reset the memory pointer to use the NVRAM and off you go.. same config but with a new password.

Depending on the router, it will ask you if you want to go into the inital config... say no.. do copy the startup-config to the running-config and make your changes.

Here is the actual cisco doc for the 1600 series router.

Sorry for the wrong info earlier I guess I had my head up %#$#^^$&% . Anyways, at least the url gave you a step by step. Next time I will not be in so much of a hurry!!! Jeter@LasVegas.com Remember to pass Cisco's CCNA you need at least an 849 to pass!!!

Jeter- you think you have the corner on that position? ;-) We ALL have been there.. more then we care to admit to..
