Backup Exec 8.6 on Windows 2000 Professional. SONY AIT2 stand alone external drive.

My issue is with the incremental backup that I run four times a week - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

I have three tapes in the media set for the job, and it is set to append to media or overwrite if append not possible. Each tape holds about 60GB, and the job usually takes up about 12GB each time, so one tape should last all week. Thing is, I often come in in a morning, the tape has been ejected, and it prompts me to insert overwriteable media.

If it can't append to this particular tape, why won't it overwrite it??

Backup Exec will not overwrite media that has an overwrite protection time enabled. (Check you media sets to see what the overwrite protection settings are - you can also check each tape individually).

Let us know how you go.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Rols.

For all three tapes in that media set there is 'None' set for overwrite protection time and append time left is set to infinite.

I assume that infinite means that the media can be appended to at any time, right?

Don't forget that BE cannot backup onto a tape that already has part of the backup job on it. In other words...you are backing up 12 GB. After 8 GB the end of tape is reached. BE requires another tape, it will NOT put the last 4 GB at the beginning of the tape.
