I'm lost here. I've been researching non stop on this since last Friday and I'm coming up empty handed. I've spoke with ASUS support and still nothing.

I've got the following hardware (2 identical machines doing the exact same thing)

Motherboard: ASUS P5VD2-VM SE
Processor: Intel Dual Core E2180
Video Card: Gigabyte GV-NX72G512E2 7200GS R
Hard Drive: Maxtor 80GB SATA II
DVD-ROM: Lite-ON DVD ROM
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2

Here's what's happening. I loaded XP on all of this brand new hardware and Windows does not recognize the processor. It just shows "Standard PC" in the Computer box in the Device Manager, not ACPI processor. Here's what I've done:

1.) Installed XP using a slip-streamed CD and a new OEM license key that was purchased with the hardware

1.) Installed the chipset drivers from the ASUS CD - No Change

2.) Upgraded the BIOS using the ASUS utility - No Change

3.) Contacted ASUS and they advised me to use a different utility so I upgraded the BIOS to 0507 (the most current revision) - No Change

4.) I reloaded Windows XP from a the actual OEM CD that we bought with the hardware - No Change

5.) Downloaded the latest chipset drivers from VIA - No Change

6.) Downloaded an ACPI patch from ASUS - No Change

7.) Installed every single Windows Update except for SP3 - No Change

Other Notes:

-The BIOS shows the correct processor
-When you right click on My Computer and go to properties (or Windows Key+Pause|Break), Windows sees the correct processor
-The Task Manager does not show 2 cores
-The Device Manager does not even show that a processor is installed (Typically there is a "Processors" category and it's just not there)

I have been working on this non stop for days now and I'm just lost now. PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks!!!!

on setup, when asked for additional drivers (f6) hit f5, now u can choose between standard-pc acpi-uniproc and so on.

make sure in bios is powersaving and apic (1.4) is enabled.

rem: usally setup recognizes the propper mode, i guess u have some probs with acpi, might be a wrong cd or a hardware prob.

I tried the f5 thing and all I get is Standard PC or Other. Other just asks for a floppy from the manufacturer and Standard PC doesn't get me anywhere. I checked the BIOS before the BIOS upgrade so I'll check that again. Also, I used Ubuntu 8.04 as a Live CD and it sees both processors correctly. I'm becoming more and more focused on it being a Windows problem now.

Thanks for the advice!

I realized that since I upgraded the BIOS a second time that I had only used the slipstreamed copy of XP that we have. I decided to use the OEM disc we purchased and now it's working great. Thanks for your help!!!
