I am a rank beginner with Samba. It was set up on our AIX 5.1 server by a person no longer here and was working fine up until 2.5 weeks ago. At that time all the allowed users were unable to connect without getting the ID/Password prompt. I have noticed that smbd is running but nmbd is not and when I try to start it, it fails to start. Users can only connect to the path via a share with hosts allow and their PC ID, not IP.

I have reviewed the smb.conf file and find nothing that I can identify is wrong.

Our network people claim they didn't change anything but they are predominately PC people and know nothing about AIX or Samba.

Any help would be appreciated.

Paul

If you execute testparm from where ever your samba binaries are, does it complain about any parameters in the smb.conf file?

If all is okay, check the nmbd.log as phv mentioned.
It could just be that the nmbd is already bound to it's port although the process is dead
Check for :
bind failed on port 137 socket_addr = 0.0.0.0.
Error = Address already in use
In your log file.
