just a guess here but dtlogin fails to authenticate users under NIS+ if the password is longer than 8 characters, also
creating a NIS+ user account or changing the user account passwd by selecting "Set At Next Login", it causes dtlogin to fail after entering the password:
"dtlogin (NIS+): couldn't change password for <username>"
is everthing okay with "/etc/shells" ? ensure that it contains the direct path to the shell as specified in the "/etc/passwd" file.
