Nis server not responding

I had to re-install aix 5.3 on a workstation. When i get to the step - configure/modify nis - configure this host as a nis client, and enter the name of the server, the process runs for a few minutes and then fails

I read somewhere it might be because the server is on a different subnet, but this has never been a problem before.

If it was on a different subnet, did you by chance have a static route to it which you haven't defined yet during your re-build?

I haven't defined any routes. All i have done so far was set the IP, network mask, name server and set the domain name when i started configuring nis
