NIS PASSWORD help

We setup rs/6000 F50 as NIS master server. NIS clients are mostly HP unix stations and a few ibm 43p stations. Our problem is on the password setup specially on the "lockout aspect". We configured user accounts to have 5 failed logins before it is locked out. However, when tested on the clients after 5 failedlogins it won't be lockedout and will wait again till the correct password is made. Password lockout only works when login is done on the NIS master server.
Need help on this setup...Thanks
