Hi all,
I have searched the forums for the answer to this puzzle.
I have a slave server in my NIS environment that does not want to play fair.
All files and NIS configurations are correct. ie auto_home, auto_master, nsswitch.conf, ypbind + ypserv running, rpcinfo ok, domainname configured correctly, NIS maps are updating correctly when pushed from the master. e.t.c
However, I am still getting no directory when trying to login with a nis account.

My colleagues have provided a different set of eyes / brain to the problem and cannot find anything wrong. The server has been rebooted.

Now the mad pills are starting to wear off and I fear for this servers health ( in the sense that my size 9's will shortly be taking revenge for wasting my day ).
Can anyone provide any other assistance / advice to save this inanimate piece of junk from being dropped from the 5th floor?

Thanks in advance, all help appreciated.

Hmmm...are you using netgroups with NFS shares? I would say check there to make sure that system can mount the drives.

I did reply to this but it seems to have got lost in the system, typical, sums up my day.

Coffeysm, thanks for the reply, I can mount the home areas directly without any problems using NFS.

Cheers
Alan

You probably have done this but...can you see the maps with the ypcat commands. Also, autofs and nfs.client scripts have not been disabled? Can you cd /net/<server>/shares? What if you try logging in as root and cding into that directory and run a truss command?

It's an automount problem. As coffee suggested make sure autofs and nfs client are running.

/etc/init.d/autofs start
/etc/init.d/nfs.client start

Gents,

Thanks very much for the pointers.
It was the nfs.client that was causing the problem.

I thought I had covered all the bases. Obviously not.
This got through three unix sa's..oops, best we retrain.

Thanks again. Enjoy the stars.

Guys,

Something related, but different server, and this time Solaris 10.
A test box configured for NIS. As before all config files look OK, NFS client has been enabled.
When my guys are logging in their .profile is not being picked up. They are having to . ./.profile to pick this up.
Any ideas please?

Thanks
Alan

Hmm, I never messed with Solaris 10. I would say check out the file permissions and ownership?

Thanks coffeysm,

This is a weird one. My guys can login with their NIS accounts but are getting a chdir error;
Could not chdir to home directory.

This throws them straight into /, rather than any home areas. Which explains the no profile I guess.

I need to work on this some more, but thanks for replying.
