I recently set up Norton Internet Security 2002 to block the annoying Windows Messenger with advertising pop-ups. I run XP Professional on a home network. I have Time Warner Cable Roadrunner service with a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem. My home network runs on a linksys switch (I was running a Linksys router but it gave me fits....see thread916-652635 if you are interested in all the gory details but it's probably not necessary for purposes of this thread).

I configured NIS just like it is described in Symantec's knowledge base (see the document "How to block Windows Messenger service messages" in their knowledge base). In essence, it told me to set up a new rule under Personal Firewall/Internet Access Control/Configure/System-Wide Settings and block the following:

- Block Internet Access
- Connections from other computers
- Any computer
- TCP and UDP
- Ports to block -> Only the types of communication or ports listed below, Known ports from list, ports 135, 137, 138, 139, and 445

I did all of this, re-booted, and I am STILL getting those annoying pop-ups.

I have disabled ICF from Microsoft's Home Network set-up.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Try disabling the messenger service,
In 'Control Panel', open 'Administrative tools', then 'services'. Locate and open 'messenger' on the list of services and set the startup type to 'disabled'
