nickname to remote server error

Got an unhelpful error msg after trying to set a nickname to a remote:
SQL0901N The SQL statement failed because of a non-severe system error. Subsequent SQL statements can be processed. (Reason "No columns in nickname".)

Coming from linux db2 to remote as400 - I know it is all setup correctly, because nicknames work to other as400s. The file I am linking to is not empty and has valid data types and I can connect directly. Conclusion: something has not been setup on the new as400 - any ideas?
