Have a Nice Thales Wordnet Series 3 recorder with 2 VXA drives installed in sequence mode. Standby drive failes and reports "Failed to Initialise" each time the drive is put into service once the archive drive fills up. Customer must eject tapes and clean drives to continue. I had this problem with the same customer when they had a Racal Wordnet with DDS3 drives. I thought that upgrading would solve tape issues but no solution here. Tired of changing out drives becuase this does not seem to help problem. Anyone have any ideas? Please reply. Thank you, Rob.

Rob, what tape brand are you using? Have you tried a tape from a different manufacturer? Are the tapes in good condition? How are they stored? Has the failure ever occurred during a normal archive cycle or only when the stand-by tape is activated? How are the tapes stored? Are there any unusual enviromental issues?

How long does the tape sit in stand-by mode? Is an exteneded period of time recommended by the manufacturer? Can the tape be exposed to the elements for an extended period of time? (If you think about the tape sitting in the drive the tape lid is open and the tape is exposed. Probably not a good this for a long period of time.) Exabyte recommends frequent drive cleanings more than any other tape drive manufacturer. Check the specs of your drive.

Just throwing some ideas out. Good luck.
