I have a NIC in a Windows 2003 server that is connected but has a large question mark on it and states Validating Identity.

I have seen resolutions to this for Wireless NIC's but not hard wired NIC's, anybody have any clues as to what is happening.

It looks like 802.1x port authentication has been enabled on the Ethernet switch port it is connected to. By default the 802.1x supplicant is enabled on all NIC's in Windows 2003 (& XP) and it will attempt to perform 802.1x authentication if it receives any 802.1x packets from the switch. If the switch isn't configured for 802.1x port authentication then you will not see 'Validating Identity'.
I suggest you talk to your networking guys to see what's configured.

HTH

Andy
