Hey guys,

I have a problem in Redhat9 that I thought was my NIC dying. I have since left the PC on for a number of hours in both Win98 and Mandrake 9.1 and the nic has stayed alive fine so I think it must be something I've done to Redhat9.

What happens is, after a certain amount of time (fluctuates from 20 mins to a few hours), I need to run NEAT and deactivate then reactivate eth0 to get my network connection back.

Any ideas? Anyone seen anything like that before? I'm guessing, if I can't figure out how to fix it, that I'll need to reinstall.

Thanks
Wmg

This should be a hub/switch problem. I had a similar problem some 4 months ago, except mine died about every 5 to 10 minutes. This only effected my system under RH8 but not under Win98, although Win98 did seem to stall for 3~5 seconds every now and then. As a temporary fix before I had enough cash to buy a new switch, I made a cron job that would issue "ifdown eth0; ifup eth0" and ran it every 5 minutes. This fix also introduced a similar stall that I experienced in Win98. After changing a switch, the nightmare was over. There was also another guy on this forum that posted the same question as you, and also solved his problem by changing his hub/switch.

Ahh - that's interesting. If that's the case then I've just recently had my faulty switch replaced with another faulty switch (slightly different fault though!).

I might try connecting straight into the ADSL modem from my NIC and see the the problem goes away. That should make it fairly obvious what it is - then I can get this one replaced under warranty as well.

Thanks zeland!!

FYI - I unplugged the switch from the loop last night and left RH9 running. This morning, it had still disconnected itself.

Due to the fact that doesn't happen to Mdk9.1, I'm leaning towards some kind of configuration problem.

Thanks for the ifdown/ifup network-script pointer though! I'll implement that cron job (ooh - my first one!! :) ) until I have time to a) figure it out b) reinstall.

Thanks again
