I have an IBM Power PC 7248 with an onboard 10MB NIC. I installed a 10/100 NIC recently. I thought it was set up, howerver I cannot ping anything on the network. I can ping the 10/100 cards IP address fine. But nothing else. Cable is plugged in and does have a connection to the network. Do I need to disable the onboard card first? How would I do that? I need help with this. James Collins

can you provide output for "ifconfig -a" and "netstat -rn"?
Also what IP are you trying to ping that you cannot. sounds like a routing problem..

I will get the output for the ifconfig -a and netstat -rn. The IP address is on the same subnet as the NIC. James Collins

This is an error message I get when trying to stop tcpip services (stopsrc tcpip)

"The System Resource Controller is having socket problems. If you specify a foreign host, try configuring internet sockets and try your command again."

Anyone know what this is?
I can ping out and I can ping the AIX system, I just cant telnet or ftp in. James Collins

Hi,
just a couple of question.

0) are you sure that 7248 can mount 10/100 nic ?
(I have not risc-configurator in my hand)

1) if I rem. 7248 has SMS on floppy. Have the last firmware
level ?

2) are you sure your machine/OS sees the nic ?
(use diag and/or lsdev -C | grep en)

3) have you installed from AIX-CD right driver ?
(insert CD #1 and enter "smitty cfgmgr")

4) if you want have 2 active nic, the second cannot
be conf.ed by "smitty mktcpip":

5) if you have 2 nics each has an address (and if you want)
a so-called hostname in /etc/hosts, but your machine
has just 1 hostname: don't confuse on this point.

6) the second nic has to be conf.ed by "smitty tcpip",
futher...,

7) a suggest: clear all network interfaces (same smit loc),
enter cfgmgr, understand which is en0 and which en1, and
put the cable in right pos.
use smitty mktcpip to conf 1st nic, and ..further.. for
the second.

8) have a look in /etc/hosts: clear wrong rows and remember:
the same hostname cannot stay in 2 rows with different
address: your second address must have another h.name
eg myhost10

bye.
