I have a Dell 4400 running W2000 Advanced server. It has 2 Intel nics. When I ping the server with the -t option, sometimes I get one reply then no response. Other times I let the ping run for about 45 minutes until it goes to sleep. It's never the same. It happens with both nics. It will wake up and resume answering the pings if I open a web browser, ie. IE or Netscape. I have tried just configuring one nic, teaming the nics and about everything else. All power management stuff is off. I have tried setting to 100mps, and Auto and it still happens. I have searched thru the forum and found several folks with a similar problem but nothing that will address this. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

tks,

Sounds really strange. I can only suggest a few items in my opinion. If this server is testable get an old switch 3com etc or even better a hub and put the PC with both nics into this box and then your pc to and see if the pings still fail. If this is the case then you know first and foremost its not your infrastructure. If it is your infrastructure check VLANS port configs etc rouge routes..

Wrong subnet mask. (It does happen...)
Update Driver from Intel..
In the hub set to 10mps half and work your way to the top..
My line is always go back to half duplex first and test as full duplex standards are not always followed..
If these fail then check out silly things like IP security policys local firewalls etc or some mad software playing up.. This I would say is unlikely.

Try some and remember above all else its a dell so call them and see if they have heard of the problem they may have a fix..

Thanks for your response Juggy. I haven't given much thought to the subnet mask. I'm leaning towards the inboard NIC as being bad. I will also try the half dux route too.
