I have an HP Pavilion that I cannot get a NIC to work in. It used to work fine on a peer to peer. Nothing has changed, that I know of...

It's a P III w/64 MB RAM, Win 98SE, slow as molasses. I get the NIC to install OK but then when it reboots I get NO IP address nor does it show up on the WINIPCFG box. I have tried 2 different cards AND a USB Ethernet connection and re-insatalled Windows to no avail.

Could it be DUN?

what protocols etc. are associated with the NIC in your network settings?

Pavilions don't like things not HP. More info like what cards and the stuff PCLine asked will help us.

Everything is "default", no static IP's or anything. I am also unable to run the IE Setup Wizard, it gives me a message that says "Failed to load the Internet Connection Wizard". This alone tells me something is amiss with Windows!

Did not your Pavilion come with an onboard NIC?

1. Remove the new nic
2. In bios enable the onboard NIC
3. In Device Manager disable the onboard nic
4. In Bios disable the onboard nic
5. Reinstall the new nic, including drivers

If still no joy, you need to make registry edits to remove the Winsock and Winsock2 service entries; remove DUN, and add back DUN to rebuild the Winsock service stacks.

Well folks apparently it was a little more complicated, or a little less depending on how you look at it. First off, IE6 setup had been interrupted and not completed. Second, the LinkSys 10/100 requires, I believe, a complete install/uninstall from their CD. Third, McAfee Firewall, which didn't show being loaded, was blocking IE from the Internet.

How this happened I have no FREAKING IDEA! However, it doesn't surprize me considering the source. Thank you ALL for your input and assistance! Y'all have ALWAYS come through for me!
