Every time I try configuring an ethernet card on my system, internet based programs like IE give me 'illegal operation in unknown module at 000:00fd0c93', or something like that.I've tried different NIC cards with the same result(first linksys then netgear). Its a Gateway system with Win98SE. I'm using IE 5, but I already tried installing 5.5 and repairing it. I had to revert back my hard drive to get back online. Can anyone give me a clue on whats going on??

There are a bunch of things that could be causing that problem. You might try putting your NIC in a different PCI slot.
