NFS Portmap error

I just picked up an old DEC Alpha Workstation. I want to install OpenVMS on it. It is currently running Digital Unix v4. (b or c)? Anyway, the machine will not boot to a prompt, so I can run the OpenVMS install from the CD-ROM. I'm getting the error message: NFS Portmap: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Timed out. Can anyone tell me how to fix this, so I can get to a prompt or not fix it, just as long as I can get to a prompt.
