NewSID.exe and Cloning

I have cloned a 2003 Std server that was a members server in our domain. This is to avoid having to reinstall all the apps and settings.

My plan is to rename the server, change the IP, remove and rejoin the domain. Then in theory I'll have an exact copy of this apps server.

My question is, do I need to run NewSID.exe on this server after all the above or does leaving/re-joining the domain create a new SID anyways.

Is the SID of a computer created with the OS is first installed or does it have to do with or change when joining a domain?

acronis wont change SIDs. You should run sysprep, newSID.exe, or you can do it manually by deleting the information out of active directory, wins/dns (if applicable), before reimaging the server.

Its a domain credential, so if you want a "clean" image, do NOT join it to the domain then take your image. Basically, build the server with the network cable disconnected and you will be ok. This is how I image my servers with acronis. If i name the server the same name as the one i'm replacing, i manually delete the computername, the DNS and any wins entries it contains manually, then i rejoin the newly imaged server to the domain using the same computername as the old one.

Do I need to run both sysprep and newsid or is newsid enough?
What I have done is clone a production Citrix PS 4 server into a VM server. The idea is that I can remove it from the CTX farm and domain, change its name etc and then rejoin and have a test server identical to my current one's.

Whenever I clone Windows VMWare VMs, I rename the server first then run NEWSID to generate a new sid. If you are creating images using SYSPREP, you don't need to run NEWSID.

I never have used either of these apps and was not sure if they should be used together in my circumstance or NewSid was all I needed?

My server is about 200gigs. What is the best media to image it? I found it interesting that someone mentioned VMWare for cloning. How is that possible?

I meant to say my servers (plural) are 200gigs on average.

AOConsulting when referring to using VMware for cloning I was referring to creating a VMWare Windows image. If I need to create a clone of this VMware image, I use the cloning feature in Vmware and then rename it and then run NEWSID to generate a new sid for it.
