News Archive - how can I let users view it?

Hi, just wondering if anyone new a way I can give users with Reader access to a website access to view listings in the 'Archive' of the news area?

I want them to be able to go back and see what was listed in the news area before it was archived or before it expired but dont want them to be able to add or edit listings in the area.

After playing around with permissions for the news area it appears that Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties for an area on the portal site is required for a user to view expired or archived items in the news area.

Is this normal or have I done something bad to my permissions?

PS. please excuse my spelling of knew in the first post I know it is not new when used in that context.
