Folks,

What is the difference between newfs and mkfs?

I used the newfs command instead of mkfs to create a new (ufs) VxVM volume. Is this ok?

If I was going to create a VxFS volume I would have used mkfs.

Thanks.

Acoording to the man page:

"newfs is a "friendly" front-end to the mkfs(1M) program formaking UFS file systems on disk partitions. newfs calculates the appropriate parameters to use and calls mkfs "

As far as I can see you shouldn't have a problem as long as it's a ufs filesystem you've created. Any other would require the -F option to mkfs. HTH.

I should use Solaris Volume Manager or Veritas Volume Manager to create VxVM.I cant create VxVM using mkfs or newfs.
Good Luck

Ady2k,

As for making a basic VxFS file system using mkfs you should try the following:

mkfs -F vxfs -o bsize=512 -o largefiles <path-to-volume>

Thanks to you both for your responses.
