Wow... took them that long to recognize "Google"... that's been around for decades.

Google, as a company, is only eight years old, and being a proper noun, wouldn't get the attention of the OED. What did get their attention was the commonization of Google into an everyday verb, and that is fairly recent. Generally, the OED doesn't embrace commonizations until there is reasonable assurance that the word has gained general acceptance.

Yeah... I get that. I was making a joke about them just recognizing the word "Google". sleipnir214's post didn't specify part of speech, and I'm reather certain even the OED had "google" as a word in it long before that.

If you're referring to the number, that word is 'googol'.

Are they just adding words for the hell of it now? I mean, last year it was "bootylicious," now "rug-muncher?" What's next, douchebag as an invective? Or how about l33t, pron, or The Shocker.

grande,
I agree. How many people will still be using any of these near-slang terms in 100 years? Do they remove words when they are no longer popular on MySpace?

I would think that these slang terms will be there in 100 years. The OED website states:

As the OED is a historical dictionary, its entry structure is very different from that of a dictionary of current English, in which only present-day senses are covered, and in which the most common meanings or senses are described first.
(
I think that the additions of these words indicate that the OED editors think the use of these words is widespread enough that 100 years from now it's likely someone will come across them and want to know that they mean.

I highly doubt that nanobot, hacktivism, mash-up, adware, geocache, Google, rug muncher, dotcom, and automagically will be used 100 years from now. Maybe automagically, but rug-muncher? Nonobot? Hacktivism? Mash-up? These words will be gone in a decade.

Whereas that may be true, they are still being used now, and for good or evil, will forever be part of the history and evolution of the English language. As such, they have earned a slot in the OED, since the history and evolution of English is an inherent objective of the OED.
