Newbie to SQl Server

I am trying to set up a desktop database environment to play with Cognos. I am thinking of installing sql server. Is this a task that should be attempted a novice like myself, is there any major security concerns. I am running XP behind a firewall.

as long as you are not storing sensitive data. . you should try it out and get familiar with SQL server.
