Newbie to scripting (Where do I start)

I am new to scripting of any kind. I would like to know where is the best place to start learning this art form. Ultimatly I would like to be able to write logon scripts for our Windows 2000 environment (yes we are running AD). This would then allow proper access to network resources and even map network drives accordingly.
