I am looking for resources on getting started using netware.
any pointers as to where to start would be awesome.

to give you an idea as to my level of expertise, i got a computer for free, and found out when i got home that it has netware 3 (the beta, ugh) installed on it.

I use Linux typically and also windows (unavoidably). before i turned on this computer i had never seen NW. I don't know what it is capable of, what it's restrictions are, or even what the commands are. The computer came with zero documentation either on itself or on the OS.

Where do i start?

PS--if all else fails, ill erase it and try Linux.

Thanky

NetWare 3 is a file/print sharing NOS. there really is no user interface that you would work on. The console is for configuration and monitoring. There is no GUI interface, or real "command line" like you might be searching for. Novell is not meant to be an end user OS, it is strictly a Network OS. I hope this helps, and if you are still wanting to play with it, post back and I/we will be more than happy to help.

thanks,
yea, i noticed about the lack of gui, the list of commands in "help" didn't exactly seem adequate, and my very first realization was that this wasn't for the end user.

the computer was basically given to me (ie, i got it from a dumpster at work {hehe}), and just thought i would put it on my little home network (webserver, proxy, workstations) to see what would happen. It has 3 1 gig disks, so i figured i could use it for rolling backup type stuff, just to practice with RAID and file/print server situations. (Not to mention a little netware exp.)

so sure, anything you could give me on how this whole thing
works, i would be much obliged.

thanky

Unless you know the supervisor password or an equivalent user the server you have is about as much as a paper weight. If you do then installing the novell client on a workstation machine like Windows 95 is fairly straight forward. Once you have a connection login as supervisor and run syscon from the sys:public directory. From here you can do much of your admin stuff like creating users and managing rights etc. If you want to look at Netware then the Dummies Guide to NEtware book is a good starting point.

If you do not have the Supervisor account use Burgler nlm. Works real well as long as you have a couple of the fundamental nlm's loaded (CLIB etc).

Let me know if you need anything else

Try loading toolbox.nlm first. Thats the way I got burglar to work
since I dont know what the fundamental nlm's might be. It would
seem that toobox took care of the fundamentals.

good luck.
