Hi
I have a new computer which is to used as a linux only box

In noodling around trying to understand Linux install I have reinstalled linux several times. Now, I get one of two errors on boot, which I do not understand

Verifying DMI Pool Data ..........
Boot Failed

or

Verifying DMI Pool Data .......
LI
LI

etc

I used the RH package install program custom install and disk druid because I am not that skilled at command line linux.

But what do I do to get past go.

Try to reinstall LILO (just that - from booting rescue mode from install cd) or set up dma mode 4 your HDD (if it worked before, and U didn't do anything with it, forget dma).

Hi,

This is a hardware problem (although it may have been caused by software tweaking settings.) Desktop Management Interface (DMI) is a facility that keeps a database relating to the hardware inventory intended for corporate remote management - vaguely comparable to snmp .

I can only suggest you try configuring the system bios (i.e. 'setup' when the PC first boots - press delete or F2 etc). There may be DMI settings - if not perhaps try re-setting the drives to auto-detect to see if it makes a difference. What make of bios / motherboard do you have ?

Its me again and I have determined the problem to be LILO, more than 1024 cylinders and my distribution of Red hat.

The question now is does someone know where I can get documentation, or instructions around this problem or if I should get a more up to date distribution of Linux.

Hi,

You motherboard spec is here --> . The Realtek message is from the onboard ethernet 'card' - maybe it set for wake on lan or suchlike.

Current versions of lilo can happily boot partitions > 1024 cylinders as long as the bios supports extended int 13h which must be the case considering that this is a relatively new board. Redhat 7.0 is also only a few months old (7.1 is current and 7.2 is imminent) so I don't think that should make a difference. The lilo howto is at --> .

What mode does your bios show the drives to be in ?
