Newbie Questions

1. How do I "highlight" a block of text in a color without using HTML code?

Is there a menu item somewhere similar to "Bold" or "Italics", that will allow me to "highlight" a few words in yellow?

2. I found the "background" function that allows me to fill the background with an image. However, I can't get it published...the area shows up blank! Do I have to do something different other than referencing the location of the .gif that I am using for the background?
