Newbie questions ...
How do I know if tomcat is installed on an unix machine and what directory is it installed under?

Or in general, how do I check to find out if a service/program is installed on an unix machine?

This would help lots in debugging/installing.

Try these commands:

type $1
which $1
whence $1

$1 = The name of the program you are looking for.

What flavour of Unix are you talking about? The commands to determine what packages, etc. are installed vary from one operating system to the other.
