Is it possible to connect to an sql server over a wan. The subnet are the same for both servers but the ip is differant
1 server is 172.16.20.200
2 server is 172.16.10.200

I can ping server 2 from server 1, but not connect

I apologise if this is a silly question

Do you have the appropriate permissions to connect? Is there a firewall that's stopping you getting through?

Start with the firewall issue: do they have the default ports for SQL Server blocked? What port is your instance of SQL Server using?

Then, check permissions: do you have proper permissions to access the remote server? Do you have permissions on the database?

I agree with SQLBill, 99% of the time the port sql server is using has been blocked in the firewall. Most places do that esp. after the episode with sql slammer.
