Newbie Question 1

Hello all,

Here is my situation. I have a computer that I just installed Windows Server 2003 on. What I want to do is to be able to set it up so I can upload files to it from different locations, (outside the local lan). Basically I want it to be a backup file server so I can easily backup all of our important documents to one location. What are the steps I need in order to set this up and make it accessible to computers outside my network? Thanks in advance.

Do you mean accessible from the Internet? You could setup FTP.

Yes, from the internet. FTP, that should work for what I need. Thank You. Just one more question. Big companies like Best Buy for example, what kind of set up do they use in order to keep all the information networked throughout each store? For example, names of customers, CC numbers and so forth. Thanks in advance.

That is a very broad question that you asked, and unless someone worked for Best Buy they probably couldn't answer the question.

A Windows Server Active Directory network should be able to do pretty much anything you want. As far as keeping customer information you're going to need some kind of application with a database backend.
