Hi,

Please excuse me if this is the wrong forum, I’m a bit clueless on this subject.

My company has asked me to look into web hosting services. One of the criteria I’ve been asked to investigate is how many “MYSQL database slots” each hosting service provides.

Some of the hosting companies don’t seem to even know what I’m asking. I’ve tried to read around the subject, and it looks to me as if the number of “record slots” is about the size of a database.

Is this the right question to be asking? Can anyone explain to me what an SQL database slot is and what bearing it has on the quality of service a web hosting company might offer?

Thanks

Karl (kwinsw)

database slot" ???

I'm afraid I haven't heard of that term either. Usually Webhosts will specify an amount of storage space for you to use. This storage space normally is undetermined that is you share it with your html files, images, and database contents, however you see fit.

As Rudy points out, I would go back to whoever asked this and request a definition of the term "database slot".

It might be a good idea to find out what they think they need "database slots" for? If they define the application a little better, you may be able to figure out what they want to know.

My first thought would be that they're thinking about a database-based web content manager, and they may want to know how many tables, or users, or simultaneous users, or web pages, or images or catalog entries or ... In other words, they want to know if some characteristic of the hosting could be a limitation to them.

Try "I'm a little unclear - can you explain to me which kind of database slots we need, so I'm asking the right question? I don't want to get the wrong answer for you, or ask about the wrong kind of database slots."

(Yes, I KNOW that's meaningless technobabble, but it SOUNDS convincing and sincere [don't gag while you're saying it ;-)] and hopefully it's open-ended enough to get something meaningful.)

Given what they asked for, this is probably as good a forum as any to ask your question, but frankly, what the heck are they talking about?

Good luck!

:)

OP has given up or gone on holiday I think !
I took his question to mean how MYSQL DB's can the host supply e.g. you often see 5 DB's are avaiable
