Hi, I am trying to use illustrator for basically the first time.

I need to make a "spanner" icon. I'm just keeping it basic...an outline of a spanner.

I am trying to make the head of the spanner" a rounded 3/4 circle. It resembles the letter C, but has rounded tips...but I can't get the shape right, because I don't know the best way to do this.

I can't find many online tutorials for this type of thing. Please, can someone point me in the right direction on how I would make this "c" shape.

try this:

make a circle shape but cliking and dragging whilst holding shift to keep it properly circular.

select the circle and give it an outline colour but no fill colour. Select it with the black arrow, then select the scissors tool and cut the circle at two points (apple + u or view>smartguides will help you do this).

Then in the stroke palette select the stroke weight and rounded corners options and you may have to rotate it to get it in the right position.

hope it helps

Keeping this very simple and not using the fancies of Illustrator, you could type a "c" in a non serif (like Arial or Helvetica as opposed to serif like Times).

Then select the c and go to Type menu/Create outlines. This will turn the c into a graphic object and you can enlarge it, stretch it etc.

Another trick would be to select the c and Window menu/type/character. There you can change the character width and height to get near what you want and then change that to an outline.

Different fonts will have a bigger or smaller opening in the c so you can try different fonts to get the opening yu want.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4
