I have used SQL server 2000 and it came with Enterprise Manager. I understand that is no longer available. Does the compact version have something similar or do I need to download something else to make SQL queries like SQL analyzer did in 2000?

From what I remember, you can connect to it from regular SQL Server Management Studio--if you have that. I'm not sure if you can use the SQL Server Express GUI to manage compact or not, but it's worth a try.

well to install 2008 you must also install these newer items:

Instructions:
Note: You must have administrative rights on the computer to install SQL Server Express.

We recommended that you read the Release Notes and Readme before installing SQL Server Express with Advance Services.

Step 1: Download and install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1.
Step 2 Download and install Windows Installer 4.5.
.
Step 3 Download and install Windows PowerShell 1.0.

Doug, are you talking about SQL Server Compact, or SQL Server Express? Compact is a really lightweight version which doesn't require services to be installed on the computer, and it has limited functionality including lack of support for many common objects utilized in SQL Server (views, stored procedures, etc.). SQL Server Express Edition is a free version of actual SQL Server--an installed service.

If you are truly using Compact, and don't need the SQL Express engine, then you can also try just getting the SQL Express GUI: Again, I'm not sure if it will manage SQL Server Compact.

Thats copied and pasted from the link bborissov posted for Express version 2008. So I'm going to get 2005 instead which doesn't require the latest version of everything.

I really wanted to know the difference which you just explained.
