What are some initial steps I should follow to determine why a Sharepoint site suddenly crashed. Apparently the SQL Server is running fine.

I'm assuming I'd look at the event logs but what should I really be looking for?

This is my first stab at dealing with Sharepoint.
 
Check IIS. Make sure the service as well as World Wide Publishing are started.

Make sure the virtual directories are not stopped

Are you getting a generic "page cannot be displayed" or other SP specific errors?

 
The problem occurred after the installation of a hotfix for Windows Sharepoint Services. After the patch was uninstalled, everything returned to normal. However the admin was not able to determine which of the hotfixes caused the problem.

 
Should test updates on a development server b4 going to production if you can ...
