I just FTP'd the iso files for my first install of Debian. I read that md5sum will check the integrity of the iso's after download. So I FTP'd a copy of md5sum for windows and it doesn't seem to work. It seems to hang in a dos window (no cmd prompt) and do nothing. I've checked the sintax several times and the iso files are in the same directory as md5sum.

I'm running it on a W2k server.

Problem solved. I disregarded the syntax in the readme file and just typed md5sum isoname.iso without any switches and it worked.

Now I'm not really clear what I check the output with.

These ARE my first steps down the Linux path. :)

Thanks in advance.

Check the output against what's listed on the server/site where you got the iso files.

If the md5 checksums don't match, then DON'T use that iso file.
Get another.
