hello,

I have a 4Gb disk and a 80Gb disk.
I would like to install the linux OS on the 4Gb disk and use the 80Gb disk as /home.
Will there be enough space on the 4Gb for the OS to run ?
Can I install the applications on the 80Gb disk, or will they need to be in the same partition as the OS, in which case, the 4Gb will likely not be sufficient
Also, for the moment, the 80Gb disk is an Win XP NTFS partition and I would like to transfer all my documents/photos/mp3s to the linux partition.
what is the best way to do that ? back them up to dvds ? How do I read them back to the linux partition ?

thanks in advance for any help

I have ubuntu linux installed and it uses only 1,5GB including the Linux OS, Openoffice, Evolution, gaim and other, so I guess 4GB is enough for the OS.

you could have the /usr and /home in the 80GB hard disk drive and even the /var (no problem with that), but if you want to move the data from NTFS firts, you should install the linux only in the 4GB disk drive first, move all data (if you have enough space) and then reformat the 80GB disk drive in order to partitionate it and create the ext3 filesystem.

as aside, it is a good practice to have a backup in external media, as CD/DVD.

Cheers.

thanks for replying, chaclinc
no i don't have enough space to move the data to the 4Gb drive so i guess, i'll have to move it to DVD's, at least I'll have a backup if something goes wrong !
