Newbie needs modem help

Hi there...
I am a windows user for many years now and have just started experimenting with Linux (gotta start sometime right?) I need some help, in Linux layman terms. (because although I'm learning quick, my physical experience with Linux has lasted all of three days.) I have a 56k Motorola Voicesurfr external modem that connects through my parallel port. I am having no luck in installing/configuring it. I’m using Redhat 7 with mostly the KDE GUI. Any suggestions on how to install and run this modem?
