Hi

I'm new to Small Business Server 2003 but have managed to install it and get the internet running and all the other general tasks that a computer needs. I have used the following to setup internet access on the server:

IP: 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

DNS Server: Have set as the default gateway as everytime I try to enter the IP address of the server I lose internet access.

So the issue I'm having is that when I go to a cleint machine and try to add it to the domain I receive the following message:

A domain controller for th domain new could not be contacted.

I'm typing the exact name which appears in AD (new.local)

Any help to solve this issue for a NEWBIE would be great.

I have managed to work out how to get the server to connect to the interent using isn't own IP address as the DNS and for it to forward other request to my ISP so that I can surf the internet.

But I still can't manage to connect a cleint machine to the server's domain.

Any ideas what I need to do?

Hi sac9829,

Usually with SBS you would use Server Manager to set up a client machine.

Then go to that computer and open a browser. Put
Follow the prompts.

On the client go to Run, type CMD hit enter.

Enter the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

You will need to check if the clients are getting the correct IP address (IE. on the same sub-net)

Hope this helps.

Yes I have it manually configured to the following which ipconfig/all shows:

Ip Address: 192.168.1.103
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.100 (This is the Ip address of the server)

But the cleint computer can't access the internet but the server can and I can't ping the server from the cleint machine.

Can the server ping the client via name or IP?
Can the client ping the server via name or IP?

The server can ping itself and the internet but not the cleint computer and the cleint computer says that it is connected to the network but can't ping the server or the internet.

Here is the IP Configure from the server:

Host Name: NEWF1
Primary DNS Suffix: new.local
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
DNS Suffix Search List: new.local

DHCP Enabled: No
Ip Address: 192.168.1.100
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254
DNS Server: 192.168.1.100
Primary WINS Server: 10.0.0.3

And also from the cleint computer:

Host Name: NEWF3
Primary DNS Suffix: Is blank
Node Type: Unknown
IP routing: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: 192.168.1.103
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.100
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.100

If you cannot ping the server from the client by IP address or name...I would suggest looking at any routers/switches/hubs between the devices.

Do you have any other clients on the network you can try?

The cleint computer could access the interent and ping the router before I turned off the DHCP feature.

Oh,

I just reread the IPCONFIG from the client.

If you are going to stick with static IP assignment...you will need to set the Local Area Connection Default Gateway to 192.168.1.254.

This still does not explain why you cannot ping. Do you have firewalls running on either computer?

Peter.

If you have a number of client machines, I would recommend setting up DHCP on the server.

Well I have tried both but still have issues trying to ping.

When I let th cleint obtain it's IP automatically and also the DNS auto it just gives me limited connectivity.

I have enabled DHCP on the server and disabled this on my modem/router and this is why I'm having the issues. Before when I had it disabled on the server but enabled on the modem/router I could ping but still couldn't connect to the domain on my server.

I would move a client machine into the server room, connect it directly with a Cat5 cable to the SBS machine's LAN NIC, and run connectcomputer. Again, make sure the client has its LAN adapter's TCP/IP Properties DNS address set to the IP address of the server. It should not be this hard.

I have managed to get it working but configuaring the DHCP settings manual.
