newbie looking for some direction

I am looking for some direction. I am in the process of learning vbscript but still don't know much and I need to create a script to first check the version of MS Office installed, then check to see if the office install cache files are still on the pc and finally test to see if the cache files are for the version installed. Can someone point me to where I might find some information to get this started?
