Newbie : Image ( Banner Problem )

I am trying to fix an image to stretch across the top
of my page

I am having trouble displaying anything that looks credible. I have tried creating big images in photoshop (1200 pixels by 40 pixels ) etc, but everything looks terrible and stretched.

How is this dark art mastered so, i can display something that looks good. Please someone advise.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? If you are looking for an image that stretches across browser window it will look stretched. If you are looking to repeat picture across the width, you have to have such a picture to begin with. Can you show us an example of what you would like?
