newbie help with sourcesafe

i just got the job as an internship and my first task is to get familiar with sourcesafe. my problem is, i go to open the application, and it prompts me for a sourcesafe database. is there any way to create a new one? i tried using mkss c:\data as instructed on other pages, but it creates aaaaaaa.a/cnt files, which i am unable to understand. can someone point mein the right direction? thanks!

to create a new database you need to go in to the admin console. It's the ssadmin.exe file located in the win32 directory in the VSS folder. From there, you can create a new sourcesafe database.
