I'm going crazy trying to set up a simple network at home.
I have a dsl modem that assigns a dynamic ip address to my desktop pc. I have a laptop which has wireless connection.
i bought a wireless pci card for the desktop. I shared the internet connection on the desktop's NIC. I set up a ad hoc connection between the two wireless cards. Both say they recognise the same network. when i try to run internet explorer on the laptop I don't get any connection to web pages.

What am i doing wrong?

thanks for that
Would you therefore recommend bridging the internet and wireless connections on the host rather than just sharing the internet conection? or does this amount to the same thing?

BTW - the second link doesn't work

Hi,

I understand your frustrations, but a better method would simply be to purchase a wireless modem router?

This way there would be no need for bridging and internet sharing would not be machine dependent?

thanks everyone but my problem is compounded by the fact that my dls modem is also a router for a set-top box.

The STb needs a ISP assigned dynamic address for verfication purposes and is coonected to the modem by ethernet. The only other port on the modem is USB which goes to my PC.

So I guess I have to buy a USB to Ethernet converter to hook up a wireless router between the modem and the PC and then use that to provide DHCP addresses to my laptops.

Correct?

A Wireless Router would act as the machine being assigned the DHCP address from the DSL modem. The wireless router would then assign everyone internal LAN addresses which would connect through the router, independant of a single PC.
